Maryport Carnival

31 May 1900

Thousands of people have taken part in Maryport Carnival over the years. It is understood that the Carnival originates from May Day parades. On 26 May 1897 a Mayday Festival at Ellenborough paraded through Ellenborough, Netherton and Maryport, in which about 130 children took part. In 1899 the separate carnival committees of Netherton, Maryport, Ellenborough and Grasslot agreed to a united carnival. It was held on 31 May 1900 with the crowning of the May Queen taking place in Netherhall Park. Today, the Carnival is held on the 2nd weekend of July each year. The community event is well known for attracting a colourful collection of characters who parade through the town. The procession follows a shorter route today, going from Fleming Square, down Wood Street to Netherhall Corner, along Curzon Street, up Senhouse Street and down Shipping Brow.
