Cueto’s fish and chip shop was the first port of call for people leaving the cinema in Maryport. It was owned by Antonio Cueto who had emigrated from Spain in the early 1900s. His wife Emilia was known as Mother Cueto and she worked behind the counter making patties and barking out orders to her husband Antonio, and her two daughters who were always arguing amongst themselves. Customers would go in for pattie and chips. Her response would often be “Chippy not be ready yet, pattie in the pan, come backy later, paper if you can.”
