Senhouse Street, Maryport 1955



Senhouse Street, Maryport 1955 is a painting by L S Lowry (1887-1976) who visited Cumbria on numerous occasions, often staying with his friend Geoffrey Bennett who ran a local bank in Maryport. Lowry developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures, often referred to as “matchstick men”. Christ Church; now home of Maryport Maritime museum was also the subject of several paintings and sketches by the artist including The Old Quay, Maryport 1956 which sold at Bonhams for £81,000 in 2020.
