Looking Over the Graving Bank to the Drawbridge Moat Hill


The painting depicts a harbour view of Maryport by Victorian artist William Mitchell (1823-1900). Old Maryport in the year 1843 Looking Over the Graving Bank to the Drawbridge Moat Hill is signed and dated 1887. The artist also lists the well-known characters featured in the painting by name, including Mick Hutchinson, wooden leg, Crazy Barney, Johnnie Heroe and Young Benson. This painting has been restored by Fine Art Restoration Company in 2024 with funding from Maryport Town Council.
